The holiday season is fast approaching—a scary time for a broke college student. You want to give your loved ones presents but your funds are limited. How to save money and celebrate the season? DIY Christmas gift ideas to the rescue.

Not only will you spend less by making your own presents, but everyone will feel extra appreciated knowing you spent time and creativity on them.

The gift of food

The holidays are a time we think about special treats, so why not capitalize on that idea with some DIY Christmas gifts that are foodie themed? Onlineclasses.org offered up some ideas in “.”

What you’ll need: Mason jars, ribbon and tags.

  • Cookie kit jars—Layer the dry ingredients needed for your favorite cookie recipe. Go classic with chocolate chip (flour, sugar, chocolate chips, etc.) or make it seasonal like ginger snaps.
  • Hot chocolate kit jars—Fill up jars with cocoa mix and top with your favorite accompaniments, from mini-marshmallows to candy canes, for a sweet treat.
  • Candy filled jars—Not super handy or creative in the kitchen? Even layering candies in colored levels will make a nice gift.

Think back to your elementary school days when mom couldn’t get enough of your homemade pottery from art class. Well, broke college student, you can revisit those days, with slightly more grown up results, this holiday season. “, ” posted on December 18, 2012, on survivingcollege.com, had some great DIY Christmas gift ideas, including coffee mugs and coasters.

What you’ll need: ceramic mugs, ceramic paint pens, an oven (mugs); corkboard, Scrabble pieces, glue, sealant (coasters).

  • Personalized coffee mugs—While some sites will tell you to use markers, ceramic paint is the way to go if you don’t want your design to wash off. Find a plain ceramic mug and decorate. You can personalize the mug with the person’s name or a message, draw a picture or design, whatever you like. The site said, “Bake the mug in the oven for 30 minutes at 175 degrees – it’s permanent and ready to survive the dishwasher!”
  • Personalized coasters—Choose four, four-letter words to glue down on corkboard. Be sure to put some glue underneath and between the tiles. Place under a heavy book to dry for at least one hour. Trim excess cork from around the tiles. Coat with polyurethane twice, allowing time for each coat to dry.

The gift of fashion

Need more ideas for how to save money this holiday season? Don’t despair, broke college student, you can create some groovy DIY Christmas gifts to accessorize with that you might even want to keep. Buzzfeed.com shared “” on December 3, 2012, to inspire you.

  • A studded phone case. A plain, solid color phone case plus iron-on studs and some super glue. Take your time applying and let it set up for at least 24 hours.
  • Geode ring. Again, super glue to the rescue. Get a ring blank from the craft store, a small geode or pyrite rock and bring them together with some glue for a super chic gift.
  • Painted pouch. Like to sew? Find some canvas fabric, create a design on the fabric with painter’s tape. Paint with a mix of fabric and acrylic paint. Once it dries, sew the fabric, attach a zipper and you have some pretty rad DIY Christmas gifts.
  • Stamped tote. Like the idea of personalizing a bag, but not a sewer? Buy a cotton tote from the craft store. Cut a sponge into your desired shapes, dip the sponge into acrylic paint and decorate the exterior. Once it is dry, you have a unique bag.
  • Skinny ties. You can even help your favorite dude accessorize. Find some old ties and update them for today! Unstitch the tie, trim the inner form that gives the tie its shape. Cut off the excess fabric. Iron the ragged ends under and re-sew the back of the tie.
