Music managers may work for PR companies, or own their own record label, and their daily activities include everything from contract negotiations and booking gigs, to setting up record distribution and organizing accommodations for tours.

Music managers clearly have a close working relationship with the clients they represent, but they also must have stable relationships with their clients’ employers, in addition to constantly being on the lookout for new business opportunities.

Music Management Careers Path

Formal education for music managers can be debatable, as talent and ability are the main deciding factors when it comes to employment. However, the majority of music managers have completed a four-year degree, and many also go on to obtain a master’s or doctoral degree; however, neither are required.

Many colleges and universities offer programs catered to a career in music management and merchandising. These programs are highly recommended, as their curriculums emphasize the importance of a strong foundation in business and economics.

Additionally, a degree in music management will provide students with the knowledge necessary to run their own record label, or manage the careers of musicians.

Students enrolled in these programs are expected to take courses such as music theory, music history, and music law, in addition to business-related courses.

If your school doesn’t offer a degree in arts management or music management, a degree in marketing, business, public relations or even economics would provide you with the knowledge necessary to succeed in this competitive field.

Employment opportunities for those working as managers in the arts are expected to grow 13.7 percent over the 2008-2018 decade.
